"How much beauty can you demand from a pile of waste? The omnipresence of beautiful images challenges photographers in particular to analyze the concept of beauty. Beauty is not a predetermined attribute of objects, persons, or conditions, rather it is influenced and manipulated by the view of the onlooker as well as that of the photographer. The ability to embellish objects that is sometimes attributed to photography, however, is not inherent to the medium, rather it is hard-won by the photographer. In photographs of objects that are inherently unattractive, such as waste, garbage dumps, sewage plants, withered plants, or a discarded tissue, the beauty of these objects is placed into a new light and the far-reaching possibilities for manipulation are revealed."
